International diabetes and frailty guidelines to be unveiled at OPDN conference

Diabetes and the best way to manage the condition in old age will be top of the agenda in a conference organised by a Luton professor for experts in both fields.

International guidelines on managing frailty in older people with diabetes will be unveiled at the 4th National Conference of the Older People’s Diabetes Network (OPDN). This will follow the work of the European Diabetes Working Party for Older People (EDWPOP) and International Experts in the field.

The annual event will take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, from 09.30am to 4pm, at Friends House, Euston Road, London, NW1 2BJ.

It will be led by the network’s Clinical Lead Professor Alan Sinclair, from the Medici Medical Centre in Luton, and the agenda will include sharing good practice and developmental updates within the field of diabetes and older people.

Professor Sinclair said: “This year we will also be looking at the many different factors which could influence the survival rates in older people with diabetes. We’ll also provide an update on dementia and diabetes, and examine the costs of care of older people with diabetes.

“The event and network is for anybody working in, or with an interest in, the field of older people with diabetes and we look forward to meeting with and welcoming all delegates. We also hope to see clinicians from primary care attending as well as representatives from CCGs. We will be using the event to showcase the latest innovations and successes in the field of diabetes and older people.”

A series of high-profile speakers will be appearing including Professor Angus Forbes from King’s College, London, and Professor Roger Gadsby, from Warwick Medical School.

The OPDN is hosted by RIA Diabetes & Education, an organisation dedicated to excellence in diabetes education and care.

The aim of network to bring together health and social care professionals who share the aim of ensuring older people with diabetes get the highest quality of care.
